Sarajevo at the Lion Hostel/Pension

I decided to stop over in Sarajevo on the advice of a few other travelers I met along the way. And I am glad I did, although not because of the city itself, but because of the family running the hostel at which I stayed. The city has unfortunately lost much of its beauty and spirit due to the siege during the ’92-’95 war. But the family running the Lion Hostel/Pension were some of the coolest people I’ve met all trip. Unfortunately the only video or photos I have is of one of the twin daughters Monela.

Herceg Novi

Herceg Novi is the most amazing place I’ve seen yet. Have you read The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas? If not I highly recommend it. It won’t take you that long – it’s only a couple pages. It’s a short story by Ursula K. LeGuin. Anyway, Herceg Novi reminds me of Omelas, but without the miserable secret.

Have you ever visited a period of your past that you haven’t seen in a long time, and that evoked dream-like emotions? I haven’t been to Herceg Novi before, but those kinds of emotions were definitely what I was experiencing.

Take a look at the beauty of Herceg Novi in the video below.

You can see in the video below that I was a little overwhelmed at one point by some chance meeting, but the story is too involved to recount here.

Swimming Outside the Castle Walls

I took a little treacherous swim outside the Dubrovnik castle walls, which are possibly the greatest I’ve ever seen.

Arriving in Dubrovnik

I got back to my roots on my way from Split to Dubrovnik (I grew up in the backwoods of Florida). And parking the car in Dubrovnik was the tightest parking job I’ve ever seen.

Then, of course, I just happened to arrive in Dubrovnik for the Start of Summer Festival. Well, this is the land of festivals, so maybe it isn’t that coincidental. During the summer I think every city in former Yugoslavia has a festival every night.

If you’re staying in Dubrovnik stay at Villa San, the apartments are in an excellent location and the owners are super friendly.

Split Again

Well, this is really crappy. The postal service didn’t send my computer to Bol because they think I owe them some money, so I had to go back to Split for another 3 days. But I met a group of fun Swedes so it turned out alright.

Windsurfing in Bol

Still stuck in Bol waiting for my computer, I did some windsurfing.

Acapella

I had to come back to Bol because my computer broke a couple weeks ago in Zagreb and my friend sent a replacement here. On my first night back I listened to a wonderful acapella group who just set up their sound equipment in the main square.

Hvar

I took a small boat from Bol to Hvar, and stayed only one night, Wednesday, July 4th. Remembering the date I got homesick for Hermosa. But luckily I met and had dinner with some Canadians who were more my speed than the revelers I had met on Bol. (Of course, the Canadians couldn’t completely sympathize with me though. ;-)

And I stayed the night at the pension of a local celebrity. This old man fishes with only a fishing line off the harbor walls – he used to just use his hands – and travel channels take, what he calls unauthorized, video of him and his dog.

Bol

I hung out in Bol for 3 days, which is actually a bit long for a town this small, but they do have a bar with some flare.

The Gaga Bar and Belgian Girls

I met who I thought were some very cool and beautiful Belgian girls who I made plans with to see the next night. I told them it would be best if they gave me their phone number in case anything untoward happened. Aurelie asked, “You don’t believe me?” I said, “Yes”, and actually extended my stay in Split for her, but she stood me up. Very poor showing on her part… Oh, well, easy come, easy go.
